    In the early 20th century, around 300 golfers from Carnoustie emigrated to the United States, laying the foundation for the development of golf as a sport.     Tom Watson, Pádraig Harrington, Paul Lawrie, and Francesco Molinari all won their first major at Carnoustie, and Ben Hogan claimed victory in the only Open Championship held here.
